Ps2 games upscaled

Having spawned a PS Vita remake, several spin-off games, and an anime, fans are hoping that the PS2 game will get a PS4 re-release next. As excited as everyone may have been for recent Star Wars game Star Wars Battlefront , fans still have a lot of love for 's Star Wars: Battlefront 2. While Battlefront 2 offers plenty of multiplayer gameplay for fans to sink their teeth into, it also has a story campaign following a veteran Imperial stormtrooper.

Given that the latest Battlefront lacked a singleplayer campaign , a PS4 re-release of the PS2 game could help fans fill that void. Released all the way back in , Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland, who visits the iconic town after receiving a letter from his dead wife. Though more of the game is spent on the puzzle side of things than the combat, Silent Hill 2 still garnered huge critical and sales success upon release and after the Silent Hill HD Collection remasters on PS3 disappointed, many are hoping that PS4 emulation treatment will finally give the game a chance to shine.

Mar 9, 2, What we all learn from this thread is that early PS3 games sometimes did, in fact, look like high-end PS2 games. Jun 24, 2, Chicago, IL. Pankratous said:. How would Sable look if developed for PS2? Glio Member. Oct 27, 17, Spain. VDenter said:. Sorry I missed it initially. Resident Evil 4 didn't even run 60fps on the Gamecube and it was a watered down port to the PS2.

Fairly understandable given that it was one of the best looking games that generation that it retained mostly a stable 30FPS and featured progressive scan output for both platforms.

Not sure if I would consider that game high profile though. Not exactly what I had in mind. MGS2 ran at 60 though. I'm not sure what you expect to prove with these examples though? Kingdom Hears and Dragon Quest were pretty massive games. Not many complained back then as far as I remember or were surprised that they ran at 30FPS. I am not disagreeing with anything you said. The reason people tend to get annoyed with the Switch is because some titles on it that should not have terrible performance, but for whatever reason do and aren't really blowing anyone's mind with the graphics to make up for it, even if we take into account the capabilities of the switch.

It makes sense. You see the difference here? Jaded Alyx Member. Oct 25, 27, Deadly Premonition 2 kind of does. VDenter Member. Oct 27, 7, Glio said:. I'm tired. Oct 29, Necron Member. Couple of years ago I hooked up a PS2 to play some PS2 games with few friends, and one of them was genuinely shocked by how "bad" PS2 graphics really were. He remembered the games looking much better than that. I think that is the main thing in many people's misguided comparisons, when they mostly only play current games all the time, they don't really even notice how much graphics have really changed over the years.

Our brains are just awful at remembering accurately. We rebuild memories constantly and fill in the blanks, which is a reason resolution is rarely remembered too. Like trying to recall a splitscreen game is something else.

Those games were originally made for CRTs that work FAR better for SD content in general because they had better contrast ratios and can display any resolution up to their max accurately. This is one of those vapid criticisms people throw out that let me know they're an equally vapid person with nothing of substance to say. As you can see in this comparison image of SmackDown 2 for the original PlayStation, the upscaled side doesn't look as harsh, but it's also not as crisp. The character and crowds look better, but the text is blurrier as well. This shot of Rayman 2 weighs in more favorably on the upscaled side as the water ripples look much better, as does the rock texture.

Since Rayman doesn't feature a ton of text everywhere and is a very cartoony game, the blurring helps give it a cinematic look without taking away detail from things that should stay sharp. With dark scenes like this shot from Final Fantasy XII, it can actually be hard to tell which is which. The text is a tad blurrier, but it's pretty close as the PS2's native resolution doesn't wind up getting blurred nearly as much as the PSone's.

Here's a shot of Monster Rancher 2 on the PSone. The character, sky and ground on the upscaled side look nicer, but like SmackDown 2, the text comes out blurrier and might start handing out headaches after a while.

Still, it does look a little nicer overall. It's really hard to tell where the dividing line between these screens from Devil May Cry 3 lies, but we can assure you it's right down the center. The biggest difference is in the hardwood floor where the scaled side looks a little smoother, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell while it's in motion.

Once again, the comparisons between a native and upscaled game on the PlayStation 2 is extremely hard to tell apart, as seen in this shot from Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando.

There are some differences here, like the how Ratchet's ear looks a tad smoother and how the box on the right is less aliased than the one on the left, but most of the image is extremely close quality-wise from one side to the other.

Smooth vs. Not Now let's compare the differences between having smoothing turned on and off and how they compare to the native visuals. These comparison shots of Resident Evil 2 on the OG PlayStation show that there's virtually no difference between a natively rendered image and one upscaled with smoothing turned off. When smoothing is on, things like fire and the signs look more natural. These God of War II samples do a nice job of showing off the natively-rendered game versus its upscaled with smoothing and without smoothing brothers.

The native image on the left is slightly more jagged than the upscaled but not smoothed image next to it. It's so subtle that we might think our eyes could be playing tricks on us except that the score is a bit blurrier. The smoothed image on the right has cleaner window segments, though it also has the blurriest score and soldier. Note that these pieces are small parts of an overall image, but they've only been cropped and have not been scaled in Photoshop.
